What is the role of art in the world?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 01, 2008:
Art is sui generis, like religion. It is its own thing.
Some people will make this or that claim for it--that it heals, makes life richer, etc.--but it serves no function beyond what it is. It is its own reason for existing.
