Identity is a lie. Personality is a lie. We are at best a locus of perceptions, a crossroads, an intersection, a 360-degree vantage point. The character of it, its quality, its scope, the allocation of attention and focus, is all on the table.
Ego invests in certain "identities," or "personalities," or traits we think we are. But what is a crisis? A crisis is perceived when any of the world view issuing therefrom is challenged or threatened, when we "can't get our head around" something or we lack a context for something, when something doesn't fit.
For instance, I've never seen anyone get killed. The possibility only exists as an abstraction to me. But if I were to witness such today, I would likely be shocked and traumatized by it I may even spin off into full blown PTSD.
Which is not to say I shouldn't; it's just the way it is.
